POÈME ÉLECTRIQUE

Groped for the torch as I climbed out of bed
Thank goodness this morn for a clear head
The dim yellow light allowed me to find
The switch of the lamp for the lounge

All is quiet except - what's that sound?
Ah! the noise of the fridge in the background
I think how man has come to depend
On the use of electricity - his modern friend

It's all around and everywhere
Lights, cookers, fridges - even electric chair
For sending-off those who oppose
      Some of America's deadly laws

Torches, toasters, telephones and tapes
      Of sound and video records
That the ingenuity of man
      Has fashioned electricity to plan

Motors, mowers, even mouth organs
May be modified to make use
Of the volts and amps or is it watts?
That drives the plastic, nuts and bolts

In desperation to generate more
An excuse to prepare for nuclear war
As coal and oil start to limit the flow
The atomic reactors are allowed to grow

Where will it end this constant demand
      Upon the Earth's resources
Population, limited food, pollution - it goes on
We must look for life's other courses
