ERNIE
Very good-looking with a good head of dark curly hair and strong facial features. He had that bright-eyed mischievous look often seen in the Nicod family. Probably just below average height he had an athletic physique. I remember him racing us along the sands at the beach and as he ran, laughingly saying 'I am 40 years older and still can beat you'
His temperament could be very changeable. When 'on form' he could be brilliant and entertaining. I heard that as young lads, Ernie and his brother Fred visited their brother George in hospital and had to be disciplined as they had George laughing so much the nurses thought it would do him harm.
Ernie set for Beryl's wedding
At other times, Ernie could be morose and uncommunicative keeping his thoughts and feelings to himself.
Quite intelligent and talented. According to Mother, he was chosen by Reyrolle to go on a special engineering course in Switzerland. However, on his return, affairs of the heart got in the way. His engagement(?) to a young lady was called off and within a short while, Ernie had taken-up with Edna Morris. Before long he was married with a family. His hoped for ambitions were abandoned and as he was good at woodwork, settled as a pattern-maker in the local shipyard.
The artist sports a beret
An excellent drawer. His penmanship was first class and he was also good at hand-craft and model making. Very exacting and fussy, he had all the temperaments of an artist.
When Edna died, Ernie became almost a recluse and I have known my mother to drop home-made bread sandwiches through his letter-box as he would not open the door to visitors, even his sister.
A very complex personality. Maybe under different circumstances he would have gone a long way.
EDNA
In many ways, Edna was the opposite to Ernie. She did not put on any airs or graces and aspire to high ideals. She was an ordinary easy-going placid lady who kept a good home and was always friendly if you called in. As their youngest son David and I were chums in the early years (they lived just around the corner form us), I was often in their house. (Terry)
