GEORGE

An aloof rather arogant person. A great reader and patriot. Kept himself to himself and was often under the influence of drink.

Joined the army service corps during First World War by giving the wrong age. Was with the supply columns in France behind the Durham Light Infantry at Somme Battle. Managed to escape unscathed and reckoned the 'Devil took care of his own'.

Left to right back: Nancy Morton and Eugene Jeffries.
Front: Nancy Jeffries, Hilda, Jackie, Agnes and Hannah Plank.

Worked as a trimmer at Pelaw Main most of his life and was renowned (locally ) for his ballroom dancing. Led off the dance at some regimental ball as he joined the volunteers and probably attended some of their functions.

Extended family enjoy a holiday cottage at Whitley Bay, probably about 1916.
Back row is Nora, sailor Alfie Morton, Ted Plank and his sister, Mother Cummins.
At front is Jack, Meggie with youngster, Hilda with her children, unknown man.

George was a tall, good looking man with fair curly hair and strongly built. Blue eyes, wore a moustache. He was the only son who would 'stand up' to his father - presumerably his father was something of a tyrant.

Another view is that he was a wicked man who worked a day then got drunk on the earnings for rest of week. Never gave any money to his wife and treated her badly. Accepted dole and relief which usually got swilled away and was always out of a job due to his drunkeness. His son Tommy would not attend his funeral.

Was 48 when he joined up in 1914 !

This is probably a picture of Hannah's mother Margaret in front of the small shop run by the family in Pelaw Main. Margaret (nee Maugham) married Thomas Simm, a ferryman who was drowned in the River Tyne. She was registered as the proprietor of a small 'marine store'. Later she had a second marriage to Henry Wort. She died in 1917. She was called 'Granny Wort' by Hannah's children although Hannah was from her first marriage to Thomas Simm.
